Beautiful Australian bird fabric is here! With the launch of a new Australian bird fabric collection for Kennard & Kennard Fabrics. The collection will be loved by the modern fabric lover. If you love modern pattern and colour then this range will be right up your alley. There are 9 coordinating prints that make it a joy to use and mix and match.
The prints are designed with quilting in mind, but each print has unique beauty as a standalone pattern that be used for any sewing project. A full gallery of fabrics and sewing projects are available on the Taking Flight fabric page.
A cheeky and bold cockatoo fabric is also part of the range. The cockatoo fabric sits happily alongside the magpie fabric to create a grand Australian bird fabric collection. The cockatoo fabric comes in two colour ways: a pretty and aqua green and a softer mushroom tone.
If you live in Australia then you will know that these beautiful birds are a regular guest in Australian backyards (although sometimes unwanted during nesting season as they can become a little hostile and swoop down at you!). These black and white passerine birds are native to Australia and also southern New Guinea. They can be easily confused for the currawong which is also black and white but the easy way to tell them apart is to check the beak. Currawongs have a black beak and yellow eyes, and the Australian magpie has a more white beak and red to brown eyes. Now you know!
Magpies are a mystical bird and such a joy to illustrate. They are an Australian icon, and magpie fabric is a must for any keen bird lovers stash. I spent many hours watching magpies in the trees and garden before creating the 3 black and white magpies in the prints. Check out this very inspiring instagram page devoted to the rescue of ‘penguin’ the magpie, which is just awe inspiring. An accidental and charming find.
The magpies in the fabric are flying and sitting in floral natives such as nodding lily’s and Blue China Orchids. The palette is bold with yellows, blues, greens and red.
Magpies sing such beautiful songs. They such an amazing range of songs and sounds – if you haven’t heard them you will love this page which has audio of different Magpie songs and sounds. The “moonlight song” in particular on this page is just beautiful.
There are 3 magpie fabric prints to choose from.

and also Merry Magpies. This sweet mirror image repeat design is already a favourite at the fabric stores.
The range was designed by me exclusively for Kennard & Kennard fabrics, an Australian family company in country NSW. Trade customers can view the full catalogue of this stunning bird fabric over at Kennard & Kennard Fabrics.
